It’s Time for the Solar Industry to Take Sound Pollution Seriously

Solar energy is an amazing alternative to fossil-derived energy sources that continue to pollute the earth. However, when the solar industry isn’t careful, it can actually lead to another form of pollution. If solar firms are careless with their installs, the systems—which can generate a substantial current—can also generate a substantial amount of noise, an invisible but frustrating form of pollution.

Communities are on to these noise-generating solar solutions, and they’re not having it. Now lawmakers are going after the industry as a whole, painting it in a negative light. This is a detrimental threat to clean energy, all because installers are either careless, aren’t taking sound mitigation seriously, or both.

Fortunately, here at 64Solar, we work hard to ensure that all of the solar systems that we either install ourselves or repair for our clients are done properly with only the best components. We also go to great lengths to mitigate any noise that naturally occurs during the solar energy collection process.

We know that inverters rapidly switch polarities to achieve an AC power cycle of 60 hertz, creating a tone of 120 hertz and we’ve learned how to properly deal with it. We only choose transformers that generate low levels of sound emittance. And our team is trained to implement dampening tactics to mitigate other mechanical components, such as coil vibrations and high-speed cooling fans.

When we develop solar projects here at 64Solar, we look at each install site holistically. All of the sounds that could be extremely frustrating for a community, when left unchecked, can be avoided. We do this by choosing high-quality equipment that has built-in noise suppression solutions and installing it correctly. When certain components’ sounds are unavoidable, we then go above and beyond to dampen it with baffling and other noise mitigation techniques that we’ve developed over years of experience. As an industry, we need to be cognizant of our neighbors and communities in order to prosper long term.
