Buildings Better Get Sustainable Soon: The Time to Prepare for Local Law 97 is Now

Local Law 97 was passed in April 2019 as part of the Mayor’s New York City Green New Deal. It promises to reduce carbon emissions and create a more energy efficient city by creating a system of fines and penalties for buildings throughout the city that fall outside of compliance.

A recent article in City Limits has identified that the Department of Buildings (DOB) has been woefully understaffed. This has led to a severe lack of accountability and enforcement, until now. It’s been reported that the DOB is staffing up and is trumpting that building owners must comply with statutes of LL97.

The article goes on to say, “Starting May 1 of 2025, building owners covered by the law will have to submit a report detailing their annual greenhouse gas emissions. The DOB will be responsible for collecting and analyzing these reports, as well as issuing and enforcing penalties for building owners that fail to meet their emissions targets every year.” With essentially one year of lead time before these penalties go into full action, now is the time to prepare.

Fortunately, 64Solar has a turnkey, hands-off solution that actually makes building owners money each month, on top of avoiding costly fines. For buildings with appropriately situated rooftops, 64Solar can simply rent those roofs and build solar arrays that save you cash on your energy bills, provide another stream of revenue via the new rental fees you’ll begin collecting, and help bring the building into further compliance with LL97 regulations.

If you already have an existing rooftop solar system but aren’t seeing the savings you expected, you’re likely one step closer to compliance. 64Solar has a long standing track record of repairing and optimizing existing solar panels to bring them up to a modern specification. This ensures that they performing within levels that will bring your building into further compliance with the new laws going into full effect next year,

Yes, Local Law 97 was passed five years ago and sure you perhaps haven’t felt the full effects of its regulations as of yet, but it’s inevitable—that’s going to change. Now is the time to set up a free sustainability consultation with an energy consultant from 64Solar. We can easily assess where the areas of opportunity are for you to not only avoid certain fines, but create brand new revenue streams in the process.
